Get medical help and leave with the right records

Call for urgent help

Call 120 for an ambulance. Give your city or county, the street address and a clear landmark. Use your hotel’s Chinese address or your map position to explain where you are. Describe the patient’s current condition, answer the dispatcher’s questions and keep your phone available for a return call. Follow the dispatcher’s instructions. For police assistance, call 110.

You can ask someone nearby: 请帮我拨打120。我在____。 “Please help me call 120. I am at ____.” For urgent care, use 120 or the nearest emergency entrance, marked 急诊. A companion can contact your insurer’s assistance service while you get care.

Choose a hospital near your stop

For a non-urgent visit, ask your insurer’s assistance service about a suitable institution, then confirm the department, campus and registration route with the hospital. These contacts serve different purposes:

Stop Hospital and Chinese address Contact
Kunming 云南省第一人民医院(总院), also called Kunhua Hospital; 昆明市西山区金碧路157号 +86 871 63646550: international medical department, for bilingual service arrangements

Jinghong 西双版纳傣族自治州人民医院(主院区); 景洪市嘎兰南路4号 +86 691 2140055: outpatient appointments; the main campus has a 24-hour emergency service

In Lijiang, choose 福慧院区 or 荣华院区 when booking and use that campus’s address for the journey. Ronghua has a 24-hour emergency internal medicine service. Dali’s hospital guide directs emergency patients straight to the emergency department.

Register with a passport at Kunhua Hospital

Foreign passport holders can create a paper patient record at a billing counter. For an in-person appointment, go to Building 2, floor 1. The hospital also uses WeChat’s 滇医通 and 云南省第一人民医院, plus its Alipay hospital mini program.

  1. Create your patient record, then book or register for the relevant clinic and pay the registration fee.
  2. Go to the department’s triage desk to check in. Arrive before your appointment; the published check-in window runs from 15 minutes before to 15 minutes after the booked time.
  3. See the doctor. Pay for any tests, treatment or medicines the doctor orders, then follow the printed directions to the test area or pharmacy.
  4. Return with results when instructed and collect your clinical and billing records.

To arrange language help, contact the international medical department. It offers bilingual accompaniment and Chinese/English medical summaries and expense lists. Ask about the campus, date and language support for your visit.

These short statements help you explain your history:

  • 我从____开始不舒服。 I have felt unwell since ____.
  • 我正在服用____,剂量是____。 I take ____, at a dose of ____.
  • 我对____过敏。 I am allergic to ____.

Fill in medicine names and doses from your prescription or packaging.

Pay and open an assistance case

Kunhua billing counters accept cash, bank cards, WeChat and Alipay. If you plan to use an overseas card, ask the counter whether it accepts your card before a non-urgent service.

Use the assistance contact in your actual policy to coordinate the hospital, interpretation and payment. Keep the case number. Ask whether the assistance service can issue a payment guarantee for this hospital, then confirm the hospital accepts it. If you will pay yourself, ask how to submit the later reimbursement claim. Coverage, notification deadlines and translation requirements come from your policy.

Collect documents before leaving

Ask: 我需要病历、费用明细和医疗收费票据。 “I need my medical record, itemized expenses and medical receipt.” Match the documents to your insurer’s requested list:

Chinese document name What to request
门诊病历 Outpatient clinical record
诊断证明 Diagnosis or medical certificate, in the form the insurer needs
费用明细 Itemized expenses
医疗收费票据/发票 Medical bill or receipt, with separate proof of payment
处方 Prescription
检查报告 Test reports
出院小结 Discharge summary after a hospital admission

At Kunhua, kiosks can print outpatient records, laboratory reports and payment lists. Laboratory reports can also be downloaded through the hospital’s Alipay mini-program or WeChat official account. For a paper invoice and detailed payment list, go to the billing counter on Building 2, floor 6.

Photograph each document and keep the originals. Ask the insurer whether it needs its own claim form, evidence of travel dates or passport details. Confirm the language and any certification needed before ordering translations.

Check follow-up advice, test results and travel clearance

Before you leave, ask when results will be ready, how to obtain them and whether to return for a review. If you have a train or flight booked, ask the treating doctor about your onward journey and any document needed for travel. Keep follow-up instructions with the reports and tell the insurer’s assistance team about any change that affects its arrangements.

Prepare for a routine visit

Bring the patient’s travel document, policy number and assistance contact, medicine names and doses, allergy details and relevant earlier reports. Save a local contact number, your accommodation address and the correct hospital campus. Ask about the cost and payment method before non-urgent services.
