Choose storage around your next departure

Start with the place where you need your bag next. A hotel near Dali Old Town is useful if you return there after visiting the lake. It creates a detour if your evening train leaves from Dali Railway Station (大理站). Kunming station (昆明站) and Kunming South (昆明南站) are different stations: match your storage address to the exact station printed on your China train ticket.

For a day trip from one base, hotel storage is usually the simplest arrangement. Ask whether the hotel will hold your bags after checkout, overnight, or while you spend several nights elsewhere. The answer and price belong to that property; free storage for guests does not establish a province-wide policy. Set a collection time that fits reception access and your onward journey.

On a one-way trip, use a shop on the route to your station or put the luggage in a booked car. Station lockers, partner shops outside the station, and courier services each solve a different problem. A locker in a waiting area may require a ticket and security entry; an outside shop requires a separate walk back before you board. Check the location in the booking app before paying.

Four useful shop locations

These are partner shops outside transport buildings, not universal station luggage counters. Prices and hours below were checked on 13 October 2026. Reserve the named branch in its operator's WeChat mini-program; the confirmed order provides the exact address, phone number, and storefront photos.   • Kunming South: 存知己 convenience-store partner. Located a 10–15 minute walk from the west station exit, open 07:00–24:00 daily. A 13–30-inch suitcase, large backpack, or any item with its longest side over 45 cm costs CNY 10 per item per day; a small bag under 45 cm costs CNY 5. Allow enough time for the walk to retrieve your bag and clear station security.
  • Dali station: 途简单 point NO.00464. Around 100 m from 大理站, open 07:30–22:00. It quotes CNY 10 per suitcase per day and CNY 5 per backpack per day. Use the address on the order rather than a generic map pin for the station square.
  • Lijiang Old Town north gate: 存知己 laundry-shop partner. Around 50 m from the north gate, open 09:00–21:00. The quote is CNY 5 per small bag with a longest side under 45 cm, or CNY 10 per 13–30-inch suitcase, large backpack, or other item over 45 cm. The listing excludes cash and computers from stored items. A bag measuring exactly 45 cm needs a size confirmation during booking.
  • Shangri-La bus station: 途简单 point NO.01255. Around 50 m outside the west gate of Shangri-La Bus Station (香格里拉汽车客运站), open 08:00–22:30. Note that this is the long-distance bus station, not Shangri-La railway station (香格里拉站). The quote is CNY 10 per suitcase up to 30 inches and CNY 5 per backpack with a longest side up to 45 cm, per item per calendar day. Crossing midnight starts another charged day.

Choose the branch that fits where you will end your day, not just where you arrive. For example, a north-gate Lijiang shop works for exploring the old town before picking up bags there; it does not remove the subsequent transfer out to Lijiang railway station.

Use 轻装行 for a local rail handoff

China Railway's 轻装行 transports luggage between a local address and a participating station for confirmed train ticket holders. The service covers distances up to 35 km within the same city. Book through the official Railway 12306 app (铁路12306), the 12306 WeChat mini-program, or China Railway Express (中铁快运). For departures, book between 48 hours and 4 hours before train departure; for arrivals, book between 24 hours and 1 hour before arrival.

Price bands: CNY 48 (0–10 km), CNY 58 (over 10–20 km), and CNY 68 (over 20–35 km) per item for station collection or drop-off lockers. Platform handoff service costs CNY 78, CNY 88, and CNY 98 per item for the corresponding distance bands.

For departures, bags are made available at the station locker cabinet 30 minutes before your train, or brought directly to the platform 10 minutes before train departure. You collect your bag and carry it onto your train. After arrival, published courier delivery to your local address is completed within 5 hours of collection. Choose the dated order that matches your hotel, train schedule, and preferred handoff point.

Yunnan participating stations include Kunming, Kunming South, Dali, Lijiang, Lincang, Baoshan, Pu'er, Xishuangbanna, and Shangri-La railway station. A 轻装行 service desk does not indicate a public self-service locker. Select the station offered for your date in the booking system. Service inquiries: 12306 or 95572.

Sending a bag to an address takes longer

The separate 便民托运 service sends accepted items from a station by courier. The current official Yunnan station list includes 昆明站 and 昆明南站. It does not list Dali or Lijiang for this service.

The published earliest delivery for the standard service is by 18:00 the next day; the economy option is by 23:59 the day after that. The order's actual estimated arrival matters when you have only one night at the receiving hotel. Arrange permission for the hotel to receive the parcel, and enter its full Chinese address, recipient name and phone number. Staff inspect the goods, scan the waybill and check valid ID. The price depends on the shipment and destination; enquiries are 95572 or 95338.

This delivery is useful when you can travel with a small bag until the parcel arrives. It is not same-day transport to your next hotel or automatic through-baggage on your train.

Kunming airport collection

SF's published 长水机场 service locations are F3, domestic departures, Area A, and B1, domestic arrivals, Exit A. Its announcement gives storage hours of 06:00–22:00. The same page mentions round-the-clock staffing, which is different from a 24-hour storage window. The published process uses a QR-code order and QR-code collection.

The announcement dates from April 2024 and also describes 顺丰无忧行 hotel-to-airport delivery with a four-hour service claim. Use it to identify the service, then choose an actual order for your hotel area, travel date and airport collection time. The old announcement alone does not establish today's inventory or a guaranteed four-hour delivery. Keep enough time after collection to reach your departure check-in area.

Carry bags through Shaxi or to a mountain base

A private driver or transfer car is convenient for a Dali–Shaxi–Lijiang itinerary because your suitcases stay in the vehicle while you sightsee. For a daytime stop in Shaxi Old Town (沙溪古镇), confirm the driver's waiting duration and the final hotel drop-off location in advance. If staying overnight in Shaxi, book two separate travel legs: Dali to Shaxi, and Shaxi to Lijiang on the following day.

Always specify your passenger count and the exact number and dimensions of your luggage pieces when booking vehicles. In Shaxi and Lijiang's pedestrian old towns, agree on a vehicle-accessible meeting gate with your driver and check if your inn provides luggage porter assistance over cobblestone lanes.

For mountain day trips returning to your base hotel, leave large bags with reception and take a small daypack. When driving past the managed Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge scenic area (上虎跳), luggage can remain in your hired vehicle while you visit the viewing platform, provided your driver has agreed in writing. The government's 10 February 2026 notice closes the high trail and the undeveloped middle and lower gorge areas to ordinary tourism. Historical hiking bag-forwarding arrangements are not a current route option.

One handoff record for the whole journey

Before dropping off your luggage, take photos of each bag and note the total item count, pricing rate, latest pickup time, and required retrieval credentials. Save any paper claim tickets or digital QR codes on your phone. For courier deliveries, confirm reception permissions with your destination hotel and keep the Chinese tracking waybill. Always keep your passport, phone, charger, prescription medicines, and valuables with you in a personal daypack. Inspect all bags at pickup before heading to station security gates, airport check-in, or your next accommodation.
