From the airport to your hotel or train

Choose the destination first

Use the metro for a city hotel near a station and a predictable journey through road traffic. The bus keeps your bags on one vehicle to a station. A taxi or booked car makes sense for a hotel away from the metro, several people sharing, or an arrival after normal metro service.

These are useful planning allowances, including waiting, transfers and walking: 45–60 minutes to the city, 50–70 minutes to Kunming Station, and 80–100 minutes to Kunming South by metro. They start when you are ready to leave the terminal, not when the plane lands.

Take Line 6 from B2

After collecting your bags, follow 地铁 / Metro signs to B2. The station is 机场中心, Airport Center. Choose your final destination at the ticket machine. The fare starts at CNY 2 for the first 4 km and rises by distance under the fare rules introduced on 15 April 2025. Pay the destination fare shown on the machine; a change of line within the gates is part of the same journey.

Board Line 6 towards 塘子巷, Tangzixiang:

  • Tangzixiang hotel: stay on to the terminus. Check the hotel’s exit before leaving the gates.
  • Dongfeng Square or Wuyi Road: change at 东部汽车站, East Coach Station, to Line 3 towards 西山公园. Leave at 东风广场 or 五一路. Wuyi Road also connects to Line 5 for other city neighbourhoods.
  • Kunming Station: ride to 塘子巷, then follow Line 2 signs south towards 环城南路. The train continues onto Line 1 without a change at Huancheng South Road. Get off at 昆明火车站, then use exit A for the railway station’s south entrance.
  • Kunming South: change earlier at 菊华, Juhua, to Line 4 towards 昆明南火车站. Stay on to the terminus.

Airport Center’s ordinary first and last departures are 06:20 and 23:00. The summer 2026 trains at 23:20, 23:40 and midnight were a temporary service ending on 10 September. A late airport departure also needs a usable onward connection if your hotel requires another line.

Use the airport bus for a station without a metro change

The city airport buses board at B1 between doors 3 and 4. Tell the ticket booth which station you need before buying: 昆明站 or 昆明南站. The airport’s posted table, checked on 13 October 2026, lists CNY 25 per person in each direction.

Route Hours in the airport’s posted table
Airport → Kunming Station 08:00–02:00 the following day
Kunming Station → airport 05:00–23:00
Airport → Kunming South 09:40–17:00
Kunming South → airport 10:30–20:00

The Kunming Station service passes 新迎小区 and 泰丽酒店 before the railway station. The table lists roughly 30–60-minute daytime departures, with rolling departures after 23:00. For a station hotel after the metro closes, add the bus wait and hotel walk. Ask the booth for that day’s next bus before committing to an onward train.

For the return, Kunming Station’s airport bus boards at the city air terminal by the north plaza. At Kunming South, follow airport-bus signs towards the east plaza. Save the airport-bus number 400-027-2999 if you need a departure query.

Find your car on the right floor

The taxi rank is on B1 opposite door 3. For a destination within Kunming’s administrative area, the airport states that taxis use the meter with no empty-return fee. Give the driver your hotel’s full name and address or the exact railway entrance. There is no single fixed airport taxi fare for every city hotel.

For a ride-hailing booking, follow the signs from B1 to parking building B3, H zone, lane 01. Check the plate in your booking. The airport gives about 7–10 minutes for the driver to reach the pickup area from the holding lot; that is pickup time, not the drive to town. Save your destination before landing with the maps and travel apps guide.

Arriving late: choose where you will sleep

If your city hotel is already booked, a direct car after the metro closes saves another transfer at the bus terminus. If the next morning’s train leaves 昆明, a hotel near Kunming Station keeps that morning short. If it leaves 昆明南, stay near the South station in Chenggong rather than travelling across the city again. For an early flight, an airport hotel is useful when its actual shuttle hours fit your flight and arrival.

For a 02:00 arrival followed by a morning train to Dali or Lijiang, book the sleeping place and transport together. A hotel that accepts your late check-in is a clearer plan than relying on a railway waiting hall being open overnight.

Match the ticket to the station

Both stations have fast train services. Search 昆明 and 昆明南 for your date and compare departures and the trip from your hotel. A train letter alone does not tell you which station to use.

Kunming Station, 昆明站, is the easier base for a central-city stay. Kunming South, 昆明南站, is in Chenggong and can suit a direct airport connection or a departure from the southern hub. Read the exact stations on both orders if you book a connection.

Book through Railway 12306 (铁路12306) or at a station ticket window. The 12306 English service accepts foreign passports; use the Chinese service or a ticket window for other supported documents. Enter each traveller’s full name and document number as shown on their travel document, and complete passenger identity verification before buying. Select the exact stations, date, train and seat class, then pay and confirm that the ticket has been issued. Save the train number, departure time, carriage and seat.

Carry the original document used to book. With a foreign passport, use the staffed lane, 人工通道, for identity checks and boarding, and keep the passport ready at the destination exit. A domestic electronic ticket does not require paper-ticket collection. For a first station visit, arrive about 60 minutes before departure and follow the boarding gate’s closing time.

Arrive at the useful entrance

At Kunming Station, metro exit A leads into the south plaza. Follow the railway entrance signs upstairs, pass identity checks and luggage security, then use the departure board to find your train number and gate. When leaving a train, choose the south exit for the metro or the north exit for the airport bus. The station’s entrances and exits have lifts following the July 2024 improvements.

At Kunming South, metro Lines 1 and 4 bring you to 昆明南火车站. Take the escalator to the first-floor west plaza, then up to the second-floor west entrance. A car can drop you at the second-floor north entrance, 昆明南站北进站口.

On arrival by train, exits 1, 2 and 3 lead towards the west plaza and metro. They use a shared security area for rail-to-metro transfers, so that route avoids a second security check. Exits 4–8 lead towards the east plaza’s road transport, including buses and car pickup. Metro-to-rail passengers still follow the railway entry process.

Change stations by metro

  1. Leave Kunming Station through the south exit and follow signs to 昆明火车站 metro.
  2. Take Line 1 on a train whose destination is 昆明南火车站. The other branch ends at 大学城南, University Town South.
  3. At Kunming South, follow the west-plaza route to the second-floor railway entrance. Check the next train’s gate after entry.

For the reverse trip, take Line 1 from Kunming South to 昆明火车站, then use exit A for Kunming Station. Plan roughly an hour for the metro journey and station walking, plus about an hour at the departure railway station. Three hours between booked trains is a useful planning margin for a first visit with bags; it is an editorial allowance, not a railway minimum.

A train between the stations can fit your connection, but needs its own ticket. Compare the actual service in 12306 with the metro journey, including entry and waiting time.

Leave room for the next departure

For an airport arrival followed by a train, our planning allowance is four hours from a domestic flight’s scheduled arrival, or five hours from an international arrival, including baggage, arrival procedures and the station transfer. These are booking margins, not guaranteed connections.

For a flight home, choose the reverse route above, add time for waiting and traffic, and work back from your airline’s check-in deadline. Prepare your payment method using the payments, cash and ATMs guide. Save your address and next booking before leaving.
