Choose the connection you need

Home-network roaming is useful if your carrier offers a suitable mainland China package and you want to keep one familiar number. Check its data allowance, validity and call or SMS charges. Choose the package for China rather than assuming a regional roaming pass includes it.

A travel eSIM suits a phone that supports the actual product and lets you install it before leaving. For a simple data option, compare the Airalo China packages against your trip length and data needs. Airalo says its China, Asia and Global eSIM products that cover China route through overseas gateways. That is a feature of those products while using their mobile data; changing to hotel Wi-Fi changes the connection. The word eSIM alone tells you neither the internet route nor whether a phone number is included.

If you require a mainland Chinese phone number for local voice calls or SMS verifications, choose a travel plan that explicitly provides one, or buy a physical SIM card upon arrival. Data-only travel eSIMs do not come with standard voice or SMS capability. Registering a physical SIM card using a foreign passport requires an in-person visit to a telecom operator's direct branch (营业厅). Travelers using Mainland Travel Permits for Hong Kong, Macao, or Taiwan residents must register through their corresponding document channels.

Set up your phone before departure

Verify your phone model, carrier lock status, and eSIM capability before leaving. On an iPhone, go to Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock; an unlocked device shows “No SIM Restrictions”. Samsung and other Android devices also have market-specific hardware differences. Note that an international travel eSIM differs from a mainland carrier eSIM profile; Apple notes that foreign-purchased iPhones cannot activate mainland carrier eSIM profiles.

Install your chosen profile using its instructions and read its activation rule before turning it on. Validity does not always start at arrival. Label the two lines clearly, such as “Home SMS” and “Travel data”. Select the travel line for mobile data and retain the original line if you need messages sent to your usual number. Its carrier's roaming terms still apply. Prevent automatic data switching to the home line if you want the travel plan to carry your data.

Install your required travel apps, log in to existing accounts, and finish any two-factor authentication while still on your home network. Download offline translation language packs and city map files over Wi-Fi. If you are taking an extended trip, locate your data balance screen and note how to top up your plan before you leave.

Save exact destinations in AMap

Use AMap (高德地图) for precise city navigation, walking directions, and taxi routing. The AMap Global iOS app supports English, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. When saving your lodging, copy the exact Chinese name and full street address directly from your booking confirmation. Searching by neighborhood names or generic old town labels will not guide you to the correct doorway.

Match the map pin to the entrance your host uses. In Dali or Lijiang, a car drop-off and the accommodation door may be different points. Ask the host for the meeting point if needed and keep both. For rail journeys, distinguish 昆明站 from 昆明南站 and 丽江站 from 丽江古城. A useful message is “请发酒店入口的位置” (please send the location of the hotel entrance).

Download data for each itinerary city in AMap. Its offline help distinguishes map data for viewing and searching from offline driving navigation. These downloads do not establish live bus information or taxi availability. For a mountain walk, save the trail start, finish, lodging and onward pickup separately; a city routing app does not establish a complete hiking route. Google and Apple offline coverage varies by area, so do not make a Kunming download in either app the basis of your setup.

Prepare translation tools in advance

In Google Translate, download Chinese and English in advance when the download icon is available. Use short text for a hotel instruction, pickup point or menu question. Keep the original Chinese message beside the translation, so a driver or receptionist can read it. Camera translation depends on the platform and language; offline speech and conversation are not universal features.

Apple Translate is another practical option when English and Chinese are downloaded. Test common phrases before you leave, such as “请带我到这个入口” (Please take me to this entrance). Specify dietary requirements clearly: “不吃肉” means no meat, while “不吃肉、鱼、蛋和奶制品” explicitly excludes meat, fish, eggs, and dairy products. Always state food allergies separately and unambiguously.

Set up communication and booking tools

Use WeChat, 微信, for contacts who use it and for relevant official mini programs. In a chat, press and hold a message, then choose Translate. The app interface language, chat translation and a mini program's own language are separate. Changing the WeChat language does not translate every booking screen.

Keep the app you actually booked through. Trip.com's current iOS listing includes English and the other language editions covered by this guide, and its official app download is useful if your confirmations are there. Save the hotel name, dates, booking reference and contact details outside the app too.

If you book high-speed rail tickets directly through 12306, register your account using your full name as formatted in your travel document. The English registration portal on 12306 supports email registration with foreign passports. Travelers with Hong Kong, Macao, or Taiwan travel permits should follow the designated identity verification process for those documents.

On arrival and moving between stops

After arrival, select the intended data line and follow its roaming setting. Open a saved destination, send a message and check your booking. If you need a local SIM at Kunming Changshui International Airport, 昆明长水国际机场, the foreign-guest integrated service centre (境外来宾综合服务中心) is in the B1 international-arrivals hall and lists phone-card sales. Carry the applicable original document. For an operator branch, China Mobile 10086, China Unicom 10010 and China Telecom 10000 can help locate self-operated outlets.

Before checking out of each hotel, save the next accommodation entrance, departure railway station, and tour meeting point. Download offline maps for your next destination and ensure your ticket confirmations remain accessible without an active internet connection. Check your remaining data balance before long journeys. If you purchased a local SIM card, confirm expiration terms and cancellation steps with the carrier before leaving China.
