Choose your arrival and departure airports

Review the entry documents and transit rules for your actual passport before buying the inbound and onward tickets.

Start with the towns where you will sleep

For a short Dali and Lijiang trip, compare flights all the way to Dali or Lijiang with a flight to Kunming followed by ground travel. A lower flight price to Kunming can mean another journey before your holiday base. For a north route built around Lijiang, Tiger Leaping Gorge and Shangri-La, compare LJG for a Lijiang start and DIG for a Shangri-La endpoint. Choose Kunming when you want a city stay first or a route through several parts of Yunnan. For Xishuangbanna alone, start your search with Jinghong.

Use these codes in flight searches. The Chinese names also identify the airport on your booking or transfer instructions.

Airport Best fit for your route
Kunming first, or a journey through several regions
Dali and Erhai as your first or last stop
Lijiang and the northwest as your first or last stop
A route that starts or finishes in Shangri-La
Jinghong and a Xishuangbanna trip
Tengchong and Heshun

Compare the whole outward and return journey

Search from your actual departure airport to your first Yunnan town. Compare nonstop and connecting itineraries for your dates, then count the time from landing to your hotel. Add checked bags, airport transfers and any connection hotel to the ticket price.

If your route moves in one direction, use a multi-city search. Arriving in Kunming and leaving from Lijiang is an open-jaw planning example: it can save a return journey across the province. Compare it with a round trip to one airport and with two one-way bookings. A multi-city search can include connections on either journey; it does not mean each flight is nonstop. China Southern's official search offers one-way, round-trip and multi-trip options on its English page.

Read each flight segment before paying

Look for a through ticket covering the connection, or separate tickets with a self-transfer. For a self-transfer, collect baggage if required, then plan movement to the next check-in area, check-in and security. If your booking includes an airport change, add the ground journey too. Compare the connection with the next airline's check-in deadline and the steps you actually need; there is no single connection time that suits all these cases.

Read the operating airline for every segment, as well as its flight number, airport code, terminal and arrival date. A codeshare may show one airline's number while another airline operates the flight. The same city name can hide a change of airport:

  • Shanghai: PVG, 上海浦东国际机场, or SHA, 上海虹桥国际机场.
  • Beijing: PEK, 北京首都国际机场, or PKX, 北京大兴国际机场.
  • Chengdu: TFU, 成都天府国际机场, or CTU, 成都双流国际机场.

Moving between these airports is a ground transfer. Confirm both codes before selecting a connection.

Settle baggage and entry procedures at check-in

A through ticket, through-checked baggage and an onward boarding pass are three separate things. Air China and China Eastern have conditional through-baggage services. The operating airlines, service arrangements and customs procedures determine what happens on your itinerary. Some airlines also provide limited through-check services for separate tickets.

At your departure check-in, ask where your bag is tagged, whether you must collect it at the connection, and where you receive the onward boarding pass. Even a bag tag showing your final airport does not by itself answer the customs collection question. Check the baggage allowance on each chosen fare, including the domestic segment.

If you arrive from abroad and connect to a mainland domestic flight, you complete entry procedures at the first mainland arrival airport. For example, on an international arrival in Shanghai followed by a flight to Kunming, entry happens in Shanghai. Follow the baggage instructions for that itinerary, complete the required customs and domestic security steps, then go to the onward gate.

Make a late arrival a useful first night

Treat a late flight as a lodging night and begin sightseeing the following day. For an early onward flight, choose airport-area accommodation. For a Kunming visit, choose a city hotel. For a train the next morning, choose your hotel and transfer around the station printed on the ticket: 昆明站 and 昆明南站 are different stations.

Before booking, give the hotel your scheduled arrival date and time, including an arrival after midnight. Agree on late check-in and the airport pickup meeting point if you book a pickup. Keep the hotel's exact name and Chinese address accessible. After landing, complete entry and baggage steps, meet your transfer and go to that hotel; use the following morning for the onward journey.

Book the way out while choosing the way in

Search homeward flights from your final town before fixing the last hotel night. Compare departure from its airport with a return via Kunming or another connection city. If the chosen route needs a transfer stay, include that night in the trip. Match the final hotel to the departure point, then arrange the ground journey and leave time for the airline's check-in deadline. This gives the last town a full place in your route instead of adding an unplanned return journey.
