One to three days: a city walk and a separate outing

Start with Kunming's old centre. Green Lake, the military academy and Wenlin Street give you gardens, history and a proper lunch break within one city area. Save the provincial museum, Guandu and Dounan for a second day in the southeast. With three days, choose a lake and Western Hills outing or a separate Stone Forest day.

Time available A useful plan Where to finish
Arrival afternoon Leave bags at your hotel, then choose Green Lake and Wenlin Street, or the old streets and dinner Near your hotel
One full day Military academy, Green Lake, Wenlin lunch, Yuantong Temple and the old streets Old-town dinner
Two days Add the provincial museum and Guandu, then transfer separately to Dounan Flower market, with a return plan
Three days Add Dianchi and the Western Hills, or Stone Forest Back in Kunming before the next journey

These are itinerary choices. A two-day visit works well without a long outing beyond the city. Put museum visits on a day other than Monday; ordinary Monday closures affect both the academy and the provincial museum.

Choose a base before filling your days

Stay around 翠湖 (Green Lake) or 文林街 (Wenlin Street) for two or more nights of park walks, cafes and cultural stops. Choose 五一路 and the old streets for evening food and the Line 3/Line 5 interchange. A hotel by 昆明南站, the southern high-speed station in Chenggong, serves an early train there; it places you away from the old-centre walk. Check the station printed on your ticket before choosing that base.

On arrival, leave your case at the hotel before visiting the lake or temple. For an airport arrival, Line 6 connects to Line 3 at 东部汽车站; Line 3 serves 五一路 for the old centre and 潘家湾 for the academy approach. The academy's official route from Panjiawan is a 1.2 km walk towards Green Lake. Line 5 also serves 华山西路 and 圆通山.

Walk the centre in useful stages

Reserve the 云南陆军讲武堂历史博物馆, at 翠湖西路22号, for the morning. Its yellow buildings enclose an old military-school courtyard across the road from Green Lake. The school opened in 1909 and helped shape modern Yunnan history. Allow about an hour for the architecture and the exhibitions available on your visit.

Entry is free with a real-name reservation through the museum's official WeChat account, 云南陆军讲武堂历史博物馆. Choose a visit date, complete the accepted document details and keep the confirmation. If you use a passport, contact 0871-65395952 before visiting to arrange the museum's foreign-document reservation or registration procedure. Bring your original document and confirmation.

The official exhibition hours are 09:00–16:35, with entry to exhibition rooms stopping at 16:35. The old site opens 09:00–17:10, with site entry stopping at 16:30. Monday is normally closed, except for the announced public-holiday arrangements. Plan the museum early, then cross to the park; a late arrival is better spent outdoors than built around a last-entry rush.

翠湖公园 is free. Allow 45–60 minutes for a relaxed lake walk, looking at the willows, water and everyday park life. Its published opening hours are 06:00–24:00 from April to November, and 06:00–23:00 from December to March. Winter gulls are seasonal; the park also works as a city stop outside the gull season.

Continue to 文林街 for lunch or coffee. 卡夫卡咖啡 and the lanes around 民强巷 give this part of town its literary and cafe character. Writer Wang Zengqi's former home is at 民强巷5号; treat it as a street and exterior stop, then look at the lane's art displays. You can enjoy the neighbourhood without arranging another full museum visit.

Add 圆通寺 for its pond courtyards and unusual downhill entrance. A suggested 45–60 minutes lets you follow the temple's architecture at an easy pace. Place it in the daytime part of your route. The temple and the adjacent zoo are separate places; choose the temple entrance on 圆通街 for this visit.

Finish with 昆明老街, using the city greenway connection between the lake and old streets. Walk 光华街、文明街、钱王街 and 甬道街, choosing a few lanes rather than collecting every landmark. Look for the old pharmacy 福林堂, the exterior of 聂耳故居 and 马家大院, a courtyard house used for theatre. A performance needs a current show booking; an evening street walk does not.

Have dinner here if you want to stay in the centre. Small-pot rice noodles, grilled potatoes and tea or Yunnan coffee make an easy food-and-street evening. The central old-street flower-and-bird area is separate from the much larger Dounan flower trade in the southeast.

Dounan: daytime shopping and the evening flower trade

Choose 斗南花卉市场 for rows of fresh-cut flowers and a working wholesale market. Go in the day for a smaller purchase or an unhurried look; go after 20:30 to see the evening trade gather pace. The April 2026 Chenggong guide gives the daytime session as 09:00–17:00 and the night session as 20:30–02:00 the next day. Public evening trading is different from access to the flower auction centre.

Reach the market and choose your floor

Take Line 4 to 金桂街, leave through Exit B, and follow 金桂街 to the market. If you arrive on Line 1 at 斗南, change to Line 4 towards 昆明南火车站 for one stop. The Line 1 station called Dounan is farther from the flower market than Jingui Street. From Kunming South station, take Line 4 towards 金川路.

Start on the main market's ground floor for fresh-cut flowers. The railway's visitor guide places succulents and dried flowers on the second floor, and processed flower products on the third; use the current market signs to find the counters you want. Dried flowers or a small item make a different purchase from a live succulent with soil. You can also visit simply to watch the flowers being carried, sorted and sold.

For a bouquet, ask how many stems are in a bunch and whether wrapping costs extra. Compare the opening stage of the buds and decide whether the flowers are for tonight's hotel room or the next part of your journey. Buy after the museum visit so you can carry them directly to your accommodation. For delivery within China, agree the exact address and delivery date with the seller before paying.

Arrange the return before browsing late

For the evening session, arriving around 20:30 and starting back around 22:00 gives you time to see the trade while planning a rail return. This is a suggested schedule, not a published last train. At Jingui Street, the city-bound Line 4 direction is 金川路. For 五一路 and the old centre, change at 大树营 to Line 3 towards 西山公园, then leave at 五一路. For Green Lake, stay on Line 4 to 火车北站, change to Line 5 towards 宝丰 and leave at 华山西路, two stops later.

The market's 02:00 trading finish is not a metro timetable. For a later return by car, select the ride-hailing pickup at 斗南花市2号门 or 斗南花市6号门 in the app. For a taxi, use the rank at 斗南花市1号门. Keep your hotel's address ready. Large bunches are awkward on a busy train; a small bouquet or a visit without shopping keeps the return simple.

Fresh-cut flowers and plants need the destination's plant-entry rules if you plan to take them out of China. A seller's wrapping or domestic delivery offer does not establish permission to cross a border. For an onward trip within China, plan the packing and carrier's baggage allowance before buying a large bundle.

The provincial museum and a Guandu half-day

Choose 云南省博物馆 for Ancient Dian bronzes and the Buddhist art of Nanzhao and Dali. Its current address is 官渡区广福路6393号, beside the Guandu area, away from the old-centre walk. Give it two to three hours, then spend the remaining half-day in 官渡古镇. Adding Dounan means a separate transfer later, rather than walking from one attraction to the next.

Reserve, enter and store your case

The museum is free and normally opens Tuesday–Sunday, 09:00–17:00. Entry stops at 16:30 and clearing begins at 16:45. It normally closes on Monday, with holiday arrangements set by museum notices.

Reserve through the official WeChat 数字云博 or the Alipay 云南省博物馆 service. Select the date, enter the visitor details requested and save the reservation code. The published June 2025 procedure allows reservations three days ahead and up to three visitors per account. A full booking day has no extra walk-up quota under that procedure. If your document is a passport, call 0871-67286223 before the visit for accepted foreign-document reservation or registration. Bring the original document and confirmation.

With a large case, use the manual storage point to the right of the main entrance plaza, near the 广福路东门, before security. The museum also describes free lockers with a refundable deposit. Collect everything on the same day before 16:50. The published luggage-service number is 0871-67204549. Plan this as storage for your museum visit, then return to the case before going to the old town or flower market.

Choose a collection, then walk Guandu

On floors two and three, focus first on Ancient Dian bronze shell containers and animal forms, then the Buddhist art connected with Nanzhao and Dali. This gives the objects a place in Yunnan's history without trying to cover all six permanent galleries. An English audio guide was quoted at CNY 30 per device on 30 July 2026; return it by 17:00.

After collecting your bag, walk towards 广福路 and use the pedestrian crossing to reach 官渡古镇南门, on the opposite side. Allow about 15 minutes from the museum. Follow the main street past 云子棋院 towards the pagoda square. Visit the square around 妙湛寺金刚塔, look at the exterior of 土主庙, then spend time in the lanes. These are useful architectural stops even on a short visit.

Try 官渡粑粑, a filled baked snack, choosing rose, red-bean or sesame-and-peanut filling according to what the shop has. Sesame-and-peanut filling contains those ingredients. A sweet filling does not establish that the dough contains no milk, egg or animal fat. Rice-noodle broth and toppings can contain meat; if needed, ask 不要肉,不要肉汤,也不要猪油: no meat, no meat broth and no lard. Put the ingredient question beside the food you order.

If you have dietary requirements or food preferences, you can create a free dining card in Chinese to show staff before ordering.

Where the ethnic museum fits

云南民族博物馆, at 西山区滇池路1503号, is a separate museum on the Dianchi side of the city. Choose it for textiles, musical instruments and the cultures of Yunnan's ethnic groups. It is also separate from the paid attraction 云南民族村. A lakeside day is a better place for it than a short Guandu visit. Entry is free, with ordinary opening hours Tuesday–Sunday, 09:00–16:30; Monday is closed. Leave your large case at the hotel and give the museum about two hours in the morning. At the entrance, scan the posted reservation QR code, then go through security and go to the hall's visitor desk 大厅导讲台 for admission. For questions about passport registration, call 0871-64311385 before the visit and bring your original passport.

Take Line 5 to 渔户村, leave through Exit B and follow 滇池路 towards 云南民族村. The museum entrance is at 滇池路1503号, across from the ethnic village. Start with dress and textile-making, then choose musical instruments and manuscripts. Return to Yuhucun for Line 5 after the visit, or continue your lakeside day.

Keep the last half-day close to your departure

Plan the station or airport journey first, then fit a short walk around the time you must collect your bags. 昆明站 is the central railway station; 昆明南站 is the southern high-speed station served by Lines 1 and 4. Book through 铁路12306 or Trip.com, matching each passenger's name and document number to the document they will carry. Check the departure station on the issued ticket and plan to arrive about 60 minutes before departure with the original booking document. With a foreign passport, use the staffed lane (人工通道) at entry and boarding. For maps and Chinese place searches, use the travel apps guide.

For an early departure, breakfast near your hotel and one nearby street are enough. For a later departure, Green Lake or the old streets offer a flexible final stop. Leave the lake outing or Stone Forest for a full day when you have no tight departure to meet.
