Choose the service for your route and party

You can organize your own trip and still hire a driver for single days. You can also book a private guided tour and keep evenings open. The key is knowing who books hotels and admission tickets, who travels in the vehicle, and who sets the schedule.

Option What you arrange What the service adds When it fits
Trains and local taxis Hotels, tickets, station transfers and schedule Point-to-point transport bought per ride City stays, flexible timing and light luggage
Car with driver (包车) Hotels, admission tickets and desired route Dedicated vehicle, luggage space and requested stops Rural detours, family groups or scenic hotel transfers
Private guide and driver Agreed division of bookings with agency Licensed guide on site plus vehicle transport Complex cultural sites, language interpretation and tailored itineraries
Shared small group (当地拼团) Tour booking and independent pre/post days Shared vehicle, fixed meeting point and set stops Solo travelers or straightforward full-day excursions

A driver-only booking provides transportation. If you want explanations of temple murals, local history or village culture, request a licensed guide separately. An English booking form or chat service does not guarantee an English-speaking driver on the road. State clearly whether you require English interpretation during visits, basic English from the driver, or only English customer support.

For a day trip from Kunming, a shared Stone Forest and Jiuxiang tour with an English guide is a practical choice if you prefer fully handled transport and logistics. For custom rural itineraries, Lynx Tour's private-car inquiry offers a starting point for chartered routes. Choose the service model first, then select your operator.

Keep trains between bases and choose the road portions

Dali, Lijiang and Shaxi. Trains run between Dali and Lijiang, but they do not connect to Shaxi Ancient Town 沙溪. Book a road transfer from Dali or Lijiang directly to Shaxi. Staying overnight in Shaxi turns the transfer into a relaxed sightseeing day rather than a rushed out-and-back drive. If you want to visit Shibaoshan 石宝山 grottoes along the way, confirm this stop and your final drop-off hotel in advance. Edison China Journeys' Dali–Shaxi–Shibaoshan–Lijiang route illustrates how to arrange this transfer as a cultural road trip.

Lijiang, Tiger Leaping Gorge and Shangri-La. Choose the exact permitted attraction before requesting a transfer. The Shangri-La government notice of 10 February 2026 identifies the high hiking trail and the middle and lower gorge sections as unopened reserve areas where ordinary tourism activities are prohibited. The ticketed upper-gorge viewpoint is a separate place to name in a proposed itinerary; confirm its current operating arrangements with the operator. A car request should state the actual attraction entrance and your onward hotel.

Shangri-La and Meili. Travel to Feilaisi 飞来寺 for Meili 梅里雪山 is a road journey beyond the city. Intermediate visits make it a travel day. If sunrise is the aim, arrange a Feilaisi stay and arrival there, rather than treating Meili as a short return outing. Give the driver the next day's destination too.

Jianshui and Yuanyang. Take the train to Jianshui 建水 as one base, then continue by road to the terrace area. For terraces, a stay near the visits and a driver for morning and evening can be more useful than a car for every city day. Plan Duoyishu 多依树 for sunrise and Bada 坝达 for sunset; fit village visits such as Azheke 阿者科 and Aichun 爱春 around those ends. Choose the lodging and stop order together.

Pu’er, Jinghong and Jingmai. The southern rail corridor reaches Pu’er and Xishuangbanna; mountain village stays on Jingmai 景迈山 need a road connection. Ask the lodging host or organizer to coordinate village arrival, the vehicle reservation and departure. The 景迈山预约服务 system handles vehicle reservations, and accommodation operators can arrange them for staying guests. For an organized group, the vehicle operator coordinates this part.

Compare total party costs instead of headline rates

When evaluating transport options, compare the complete price for your entire travel party over the same route and stops. A per-vehicle car charter and a per-person group tour look very different until total party math is applied:

  • Rail day: add everyone's train tickets and transfers at both ends, then attraction tickets and any guide.
  • Driver day: take the vehicle total, then add each person's tickets and any separately booked guide or lodging.
  • Shared tour: multiply the relevant per-person quotation by your travelers, then add the parts you choose outside it.

For a couple, rail between bases plus a rural driver day may suit the route. A family should compare the complete family total, including the seats and luggage space it needs. For a solo traveler, a shared day may spread the transport cost without requiring companions for a private car.

Send the passenger count, luggage sizes and a child-seat request with the itinerary. A driver and an accompanying guide also use space. A vehicle's seat number does not tell you how well your bags fit. For a small group, ask the actual maximum number of travelers; the words “small group” do not set it.

Practical booking steps and meeting points

Send one clear request: date, pickup hotel or station, people and bags, chosen stops in order, overnight locations, guide language, and final hotel or station. Allocate attraction tickets, train tickets, rooms and any required vehicle reservation to a named person or organizer. This makes it clear which bookings you still need to make yourself.

Agency group bookings in Yunnan use the 2026 electronic tour contract, with the operator, itinerary and services recorded and no arranged shopping. Put the agreed visits, service roles and price unit into the booking. The national one-day tour contract also distinguishes shared and private vehicle services and records the start and finish.

Before departure, agree an accessible meeting point. A hotel in an old town's pedestrian lanes may need pickup at a road entrance. Keep the operator contact, driver details and agreed meeting location together. At pickup, confirm the stop order and final drop-off. If you finish at a train station, plan the day's last visit around that departure; if you finish at another hotel, send its name and location before the drive starts.

Use this message template when booking local transport in Chinese:

包车含司机,导游另外安排。起点:[Pickup location];终点:[Drop-off location];沿途停留:[Planned stops];人数:[Number of people];行李:[Number of bags]。
