Choose your sleeping stops first
For a first northern route, start in Kunming or Dali, spend several nights in Lijiang, then decide whether to continue to Shangri-La. This gives you time for lower town visits and room to change the higher part of the trip. Flying straight from a lowland city to Shangri-La gives your body less time to adjust. A fast train gains height quickly too; time on board does not replace nights at altitude.
Use these approximate heights to compare overnight stops. The actual height of your hotel can differ.
| Overnight area | Approximate height |
|---|---|
| Central Kunming 昆明 | 1,900 m |
| Dali around Erhai 大理、洱海 | 2,000 m |
| Lijiang old town 丽江古城 | 2,400 m |
| Dukezong old town 独克宗古城, Shangri-La | 3,300 m |
| Feilaisi hotel and viewpoint area 飞来寺 | 3,400–3,500 m |
Medical ascent guidance recommends avoiding a direct first night at 2,750 m or higher after coming from low altitude. Two or three nights around 2,450–2,750 m can help before sleeping higher. Lijiang is just below that band. Several nights there can make your itinerary less rushed, but do not guarantee protection.
The Lijiang-to-Dukezong rise is about 900 m. It is still a large increase. Above 3,000 m, guidance limits sleeping-height gain to 500 m per night and adds an extra acclimatisation night for each 1,000 m gained. Leave room to stay longer or change the higher stop. Being fit does not prevent altitude sickness, and nights in Kunming or Dali do not automatically prepare you for a 3,900 or 4,500 m excursion.
Arrive and rest before climbing hills or stairs
Before booking in Dukezong, ask whether a car can reach the entrance, which floor your room is on, and whether there is a lift. A quiet, warm room near a vehicle drop-off lets you rest without carrying bags uphill. Save the hotel's Chinese name, address and exact entrance location.
From the station or airport, go to the hotel first. Ask the hotel to store your luggage if the room is not ready. Have a seated meal. If you feel well, choose a short, level section of the old town close to your accommodation. Rest between outings. Keep Guishan Park 龟山公园 and its stairs, and Songzanlin Monastery 松赞林寺, for a later day when you feel well.
Keep activity mild and avoid alcohol during the first 48 hours at altitude. Drink enough to avoid dehydration; forcing extra water does not prevent altitude illness. With children, check how they feel and whether they are eating and behaving normally. A child may have trouble describing a headache or nausea. Discuss the planned overnight heights with a clinician before a family trip if you need individual advice.
Plan a high visit and the return together
A mountain day has a different height from the town where you sleep.
| Visit | Height at the named point |
|---|---|
| Ximatan cable-car upper station 洗马潭索道上站, Cangshan | 3,885 m |
| Glacier Park cable-car upper station 冰川公园索道上站, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain 玉龙雪山 | 4,506 m |
| Highest visitor viewpoint on the Glacier Park walkway | 4,680 m |
| Shudu Lake 属都湖 / Bita Lake 碧塔海, Pudacuo 普达措 | 3,595 m / 3,538 m |
For Ximatan, plan to sleep in Dali again that night. For Glacier Park, plan to return to Lijiang. Book the return transport with the outward journey and keep the mountain day movable. A same-night return to a lower base reduces overnight exposure; you can still become ill during the high visit.
At Glacier Park, the walk towards 4,680 m is an extra ascent after the cable car. The upper station already gives you the mountain setting; choose the extra steps only if you feel well. The mountain's 5,596 m summit is not the visitor platform. Pudacuo's lakes are at roughly 3,500–3,600 m, so treat that outing as a higher day, even though much of the visit is around lakes.
Use symptoms to decide the next step
Symptoms can start several hours after ascent, often on the first night. A headache with nausea, dizziness, unusual tiredness or poor appetite can indicate altitude sickness. Poor sleep alone does not establish the diagnosis.
If symptoms develop, stop going higher. Cancel the next cable-car trip, hill walk or higher overnight stop. Rest at the same height until symptoms resolve. If you get worse, or do not improve after a day, descend about 300–1,000 m and seek medical advice. Choose a lower place such as Lijiang according to where you are and the transport available.
Confusion, loss of balance, breathlessness at rest or difficulty waking someone need urgent action. Call 120, ask hotel staff or your driver to give your exact location, and arrange immediate assisted descent and medical care. Stay with the ill person.
Small oxygen cans may give brief relief, but do not supply enough oxygen for sustained treatment. Medical oxygen and descent are different from taking a few breaths from a retail can. Improvement after a can is not a reason to resume ascent.
Medical advice and flexible booking rules
Give a clinician your sleeping heights, higher day visits and any previous altitude symptoms when discussing health conditions or preventive medicine. Keep the first higher nights and mountain tickets flexible. After a high visit, return to your booked lower hotel; after illness, continue higher only when symptoms have resolved. If your remaining days are short, finish with lower town visits rather than adding another high stop.
