Choose the month for your route

Start with the landscape you most want to see, then group nearby stops. A Dali, Lijiang and Shangri-La trip follows the northwestern corridor. Yuanyang, Luoping and Xishuangbanna need separate travel legs. With about a week, two or three bases leave room for local outings and transfers. Adding a distant region uses time that could become a second morning at a lake or terrace viewpoint.
| Month | Places and experiences to consider | How to shape the trip |
|---|---|---|
| January | Xishuangbanna tropical walks, Yuanyang terrace reflections, Kunming winter gulls | Combine warm lowlands with a terrace or city stay; add insulation for dawn. |
| February | Luoping rapeseed flowers, Yuanyang water-filled terraces | Follow that year's flowering reports; allow travel between the two regions. |
| March | Luoping while flowers continue, Dali and Lijiang towns and valleys | Choose flowers first or a northwestern town route, according to your main interest. |
| April | Dali and Lijiang spring outings | The tropical south is becoming hot; use the current organiser's dates for Water Splashing events. |
| May | Diqing flowers and spring town visits | Rain begins in many areas; lowland Xishuangbanna can be hot before the monsoon. |
| June | Diqing flowers, Puzhehei lotus | Keep outdoor days flexible within a base and check each activity's operation. |
| July | Puzhehei lotus, green Diqing landscapes | Use a few bases and give rain-sensitive outings room to move. |
| August | Green highlands, lakes and summer photography | Plan for prolonged rain as well as showers; keep transfer days realistic. |
| September | Diqing autumn grasslands | Rain season continues; reserve more than one opportunity for mountain views. |
| October | Dali, Lijiang and Diqing autumn | Consider the Chinese holiday calendar and the shift from wet to dry conditions. |
| November | Tengchong ginkgo, Yuanyang terraces, Kunming gulls, tropical south | Pick one regional focus; leaf colour and bird arrivals vary each year. |
| December | Xishuangbanna, Yuanyang and Kunming winter birdwatching | A northwestern extension needs warmer layers and its own mountain plan. |
For Dali and Lijiang, spring and autumn give a useful starting point for old towns, lake visits and valleys. Allow a quiet arrival afternoon before a full outing. In summer, a Dali base can also hold a café, laundry and rest day between trips. For Shangri-La and wider Diqing, May and June bring flower interests, while September and October suit autumn grasslands. Mountain weather differs from the town forecast. Snow photography needs the conditions at the actual site, rather than a promise that winter will provide a clear view.
For Xishuangbanna, November to February is a useful window for tropical walking. Late April and May can be hot in Jinghong's lowlands. Pu'er mountain tea areas have different conditions, so pack and choose accommodation for the actual stops. For winter warmth, make southern bases the main part of your trip.
For Yuanyang (元阳), November to April is the main window for water-filled terrace reflections. Stay near the dawn location you choose, arrive the previous afternoon and arrange the morning ride before bed. After photography, eat breakfast and return for your bag before the onward transfer. For Luoping (罗平), use February and March as the planning window, then read the current year's bloom reports before choosing a flower-focused stay.
Jiangdong Ginkgo Village (江东银杏村) near Tengchong draws visitors from early November to early December; the colour depends on the year. Dehong's lower valleys are warmer than Tengchong. Puzhehei (普者黑) offers summer lotus interest, but flowers and boat operation are separate questions. In northern Nujiang, Gongshan and Fugong have a February to April spring rainy period. Use local forecasts and notices for the road sections you plan to travel.
Check rain forecasts and attraction operating notices

Yunnan's broad rainy period is May to October. July and August are particularly wet in Diqing, with both short showers and prolonged rain. October's change of season also needs a forecast for your own dates.
Start with the Yunnan weather service. Select the city or area for the outing and read the issue time. Read the forecast for each stop and the operator’s notice for a mountain cable car.
Next, read the road or operator notice for the exact activity. Useful search values include 云南省公路气象风险预警 for road weather risk, 交通管制 for traffic controls, 临时闭园 for temporary closure and 恢复开放 for reopening. Match the place, road section and travel direction. A road notice may name a road number and a kilometre point; compare these with the actual journey. Read its effective dates and any later resumption notice. For Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, identify the particular service, such as 玉龙雪山冰川公园索道, rather than treating all cable cars as one operation.
Tiger Leaping Gorge also needs the exact area. Current official notices prohibit access and activities in undeveloped, unopened areas of the Haba Snow Mountain reserve, naming the high trail, Middle Gorge and Lower Gorge sections. No later reopening was found at the 13 October 2026 check. Choose a different walking activity. The managed Upper Gorge viewing area has its own operating status; use the scenic area's notice page for that visit. The government notice states the reserve restrictions.

Use this order for a wet day in an established base:
- Before leaving the hotel, read the local forecast and the notice for the planned outdoor visit. Confirm the return transport as well as the outward leg.
- If that visit is affected, keep the base. Put a market, museum with confirmed opening, café or rest period in the morning; choose one that fits your interests and location.
- Move the outdoor visit to a suitable day with confirmed operation. A break in the clouds alone does not change a path closure or cable-car notice.
- For the next base, read the relevant road and transport information before check-out. Place the transfer on its own day when it involves a long journey, and reach the next hotel before planning another major outing.
This works well for a summer family trip with two nights in each town: an arrival afternoon and one full local day are easier to arrange than a new hotel every night. Add a night where mountain views or dawn photography are central to the trip. Before departure, agree on the collection point and time so an enjoyable local day connects with the next train, flight or road leg.
Use the holiday calendar to choose base nights
Chinese public holidays affect domestic travel demand, whatever holiday calendar you use at home. Choose your dates and base nights before booking accommodation and transport. For a flower, terrace or mountain visit, decide which night must be nearby and build the journey around it.
These are 2026 reference dates, all already past on 13 October 2026:
| Holiday | 2026 break |
|---|---|
| New Year | 1–3 January |
| Spring Festival | 15–23 February |
| Qingming | 4–6 April |
| Labour Day | 1–5 May |
| Dragon Boat Festival | 19–21 June |
| Mid-Autumn Festival | 25–27 September |
| National Day | 1–7 October |
The full 2027 public-holiday and adjusted working-day schedule was unannounced at this review. Use the State Council's annual notice as the model for what to read when the next calendar appears; the linked notice is for 2026.
Book the hotel nights that fix your route first, with the cancellation terms you want. Domestic railway tickets can be booked within a 15-day window starting today, with today counted as day one. Check the departure station's sale time in 12306. Reserve attractions according to the actual operator's release dates and entry arrangements.
For a busy old-town stay, arrive at your base before the busiest part of your programme. Ask the hotel for the exact car drop-off and collection points before arrival. A room inside a pedestrian area can require a final walk with your bag. Use the same known collection point when leaving, and allow that walk before the booked departure.
Pack layers for old towns, highlands and tropics
Build the bag for your whole route. A trip from Jinghong to Shangri-La moves from tropical lowlands to a highland base; the warm clothes should be accessible during the transfer.
Core clothes: short- and long-sleeved tops, trousers, a warm middle layer, a rain shell, shoes with walking grip and spare socks. Add sun protection and a small day bag. Choose layers you can remove as the day warms and add again in the evening.
Northwestern highlands and dawn photography: add insulation, a warm hat and gloves. A down jacket, T-shirt and thermal base layer can form part of this system, but include a middle layer and shell so you can adjust to the actual forecast and outing. Put the warmer items in reach for an evening arrival. For a terrace sunrise, dress before leaving your room and keep the camera's weather bag ready.
Tropical stops: add light changes of clothes, breathable long sleeves and trousers, a sun hat and insect repellent. Keep these together so a highland-heavy suitcase is easy to use in Xishuangbanna.
Rain and luggage: pack a dry pouch for the phone and documents, plus a bag for wet clothes. Choose a suitcase you can lift across stone paving and steps. If you need help with a large bag, agree on porter service and the meeting point with your accommodation before arrival. Birdwatchers can add binoculars; photographers can add the protection needed for their own equipment. After the final outing, dry and repack clothes before the next transfer so the same bag is ready for the next region.
