Work out your Yunnan travel budget

Start with your overnight stops and the number of people, rather than one province-wide daily figure. A day of noodles and old-town walks costs differently from a mountain day with a cable car. A solo traveler can use trains between the main cities without hiring a car for the whole trip; a couple pays for one shared room, not two.

The example runs from Kunming (昆明) to Dali (大理), Lijiang (丽江) and Shangri-La (香格里拉): two, three, two and two nights respectively. It begins after arrival in Kunming and ends in Shangri-La. Transport into or out of Yunnan, whether a domestic flight, an international flight or a train crossing the provincial boundary, is extra. Local station, airport and hotel transfers within Yunnan belong in the local-transfer line.

These are planning allocations made on 13 October 2026, rather than dated room offers, meal-menu prices or fixed train fares. A dormitory is priced per bed per night; compare that with the whole cost of your private room. For rooms, enter the actual occupants, travel dates and included breakfast before replacing the input.

Four complete budgets for 10 days and 9 nights

All amounts below are CNY for the whole group. The family example is two adults and two school-age children using two rooms. Its rail and admission lines initially allow the full per-person amount for all four, so you can replace each child's tickets with the actual applicable price.

One person, one private room

  • Room: 9 nights × 1 room × CNY200 = CNY1,800.
  • Meals: 10 days × CNY90 = CNY900.
  • Three rail legs: 1 × CNY350 = CNY350.
  • Local transfers: CNY200 for the trip.
  • Sights: 1 × CNY500 = CNY500.
  • Subtotal: 1,800 + 900 + 350 + 200 + 500 = CNY3,750.

Two adults sharing one room

  • Room: 9 nights × 1 room × CNY300 = CNY2,700.
  • Meals: 10 days × 2 × CNY90 = CNY1,800.
  • Three rail legs: 2 × CNY350 = CNY700.
  • Local transfers: CNY300 for the group.
  • Sights: 2 × CNY500 = CNY1,000.
  • Subtotal: 2,700 + 1,800 + 700 + 300 + 1,000 = CNY6,500.

Two adults and two children, two rooms

  • Rooms: 9 nights × 2 rooms × CNY300 = CNY5,400.
  • Meals: 10 days × (2 × CNY90 + 2 × CNY50) = CNY2,800. The children's CNY50 is a meal allowance, not a restaurant discount.
  • Three rail legs: 4 × CNY350 = CNY1,400 before replacing child fares.
  • Local transfers: CNY450 for the group.
  • Sights: 4 × CNY500 = CNY2,000 before replacing child tickets.
  • Subtotal: 5,400 + 2,800 + 1,400 + 450 + 2,000 = CNY12,050.

Four adults sharing two rooms

  • Rooms: 9 nights × 2 rooms × CNY300 = CNY5,400.
  • Meals: 10 days × 4 × CNY90 = CNY3,600.
  • Three rail legs: 4 × CNY350 = CNY1,400.
  • Local transfers: CNY450 for the group.
  • Sights: 4 × CNY500 = CNY2,000.
  • Subtotal: 5,400 + 3,600 + 1,400 + 450 + 2,000 = CNY12,850.

The couple's total is CNY3,575 per person. Four adults splitting every shared cost equally pay CNY3,533.75 each. The family total uses its own room and meal assumptions; it is not four copies of a solo budget.

Trains, last-mile rides and a chosen driver day

Price Kunming–Dali, Dali–Lijiang and Lijiang–Shangri-La separately for your dates. CNY350 per person is an allocation for all three legs, not a fare promise. Kunming (昆明站) and Kunming South (昆明南站) also have different access journeys; compare the train plus the trip from your hotel.

Dali railway station is about 17 km from the old town. The operator's station-to-old-town direct bus costs CNY5 per person one way and takes about 40 minutes, ending at 环洱海服务中心. In Lijiang, route 101 links 忠义市场 with the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain area at 甘海子 for CNY15 per person each way. Those fares were checked on 13 October 2026 against published operator information. They help price specific rides; they do not replace every transfer in the model.

For a driver comparison, enter an illustrative CNY800 per suitable vehicle per day. Two selected days cost CNY1,600 for the vehicle: CNY1,600 solo, CNY800 each for two, or CNY400 each for four. This is a calculation input, not a supplier quote, and those days are not already included in the four totals. Add the actual car cost and subtract only the journeys it replaces. A transfer included in a tour should be counted once.

State passenger and luggage numbers when asking for a car quote, including children. Check that the passenger seats remain sufficient after the driver's seat, and that the quoted route covers your pickup and final drop-off. On a route with overnight driving, put any agreed driver lodging, meals, parking or tolls into that vehicle line. Replace the sight allowance with your chosen tickets

These adult prices were checked on 13 October 2026. The Jade Dragon price table is dated 11 May 2026. Choose one cable-car route for that day.

Glacier Park + Pudacuo + Songzanlin + the upper gorge totals CNY513 per adult, before travel from the cities and optional extras. Choosing Spruce Meadow instead makes the same list CNY433. Replace the CNY500 allowance with the list you actually choose; it is not an all-inclusive pass.

At Jade Dragon, the optional full-route Blue Moon Valley electric cart costs CNY40 per person. That is a separate service from the CNY20 internal bus already counted in the cable-car examples. Pudacuo's CNY138 already includes its CNY70 park bus, so do not add that bus again.

Rooms, meals and the family calculation

A double or twin-room price is per room. Compare a room near the places you will visit with a lakeside room that needs more transfers; also select heating and the room type you want in Shangri-La. Enter the children's exact ages and the hotel's permitted occupancy before comparing a family room with two rooms. Free use of an existing bed does not settle the breakfast charge or allow every family into any room.

For food, the CNY90 adult-day allocation can be broken into CNY20 breakfast + CNY25 lunch + CNY35 dinner + CNY10 water or a snack. These are spending choices, not menu quotations. A rice or noodle meal is easy to budget alone; with shared dishes, add rice, drinks and any listed tea or cover charge before splitting the bill. Allow separately for coffee, alcohol or a mushroom meal if you want them.

A concrete breakfast example is Kunming's i野·倾城国际青年旅舍（昆明翠湖南屏步行街店）, which lists a fixed breakfast at CNY25 per person, also CNY25 for children aged 17 and under, on the booking page checked 13 October 2026. If your room includes breakfast, remove the breakfast allocation for those mornings instead of adding it twice.

For rail, a child aged 6 to under 14 on departure day needs a child-discount ticket; use the actual checkout fare. A ticketed adult may take one child under 6 free without a separate seat. Book a child ticket if that child needs a seat. Attraction and cable-car reductions have their own age or height rules, so replace those tickets separately rather than halving the whole family budget.

What changes for 7 or 14 days?

The table holds the couple's rail, local transfers and selected-sight allowances at CNY700 + CNY300 + CNY1,000. Only rooms at CNY300 per night and food at CNY180 per day change. It shows the arithmetic of staying longer, not a recommended four-city itinerary in seven days.

For seven days, choosing fewer bases can remove train legs and hotel transfers. A longer trip to Pu'er and Jinghong, or to Jianshui and Yuanyang, needs its own transport and sight lines. It cannot use the northern rail subtotal unchanged.

Make your final booking worksheet

  1. Choose the bases and enter the actual room nights, including any night needed for a late arrival or early flight.
  2. Price rooms for the exact occupants, then list meals that are already included.
  3. Price intercity travel and local rides from the station or airport to the accommodation.
  4. Pick the scenic route and its ticket components, then compare a car or package against the journeys it replaces.
  5. Add the group subtotal and a chosen reserve. Divide only the costs you actually share.
  6. Add travel into and out of Yunnan, entry documents, insurance, shopping and upgrades as separate lines.

Compare leaving from Shangri-La with returning to Kunming using actual flight or train prices for your dates. Returning adds another intercity leg and may add a transfer and room night.
