Kunming to Dali, from your starting address to your hotel

Train or direct vehicle?

For a direct trip, rail gives a short seated journey through Yunnan’s countryside. Add the trip from your starting address to the departure station, time for security and boarding, and the ride from Dali station to your accommodation. A train’s running time is only one part of the hotel-to-hotel journey.

A direct car lets you keep bags in one vehicle, travel with your group and choose a stop. Ask for a quote from your exact Kunming pickup address to the actual Dali hotel, including any Chuxiong or Lufeng visit. Specify passengers, luggage and the planned stop before agreeing on the vehicle. Use the driver and tour booking guide to arrange it. Compare the whole quote with your group’s train tickets and both local transfers.

Choose 昆明 or 昆明南

Kunming station, 昆明站, is in the central city. Kunming South, 昆明南站, is in Chenggong, farther southeast. Start with your hotel or airport arrival address and compare the route to each station against the actual train departure. A city search can return both stations, so read the station on the individual result before buying.

The cheaper C9506 example shows why one quoted fare does not cover every departure. Search your travel date for the time, fare and available seat together.

If you land in Kunming and want to continue that day, choose the train after adding immigration, baggage collection and the transfer to its named station. Kunming South is not automatically the best station for an airport arrival. An overnight in Kunming gives you a simpler next-day departure when a flight leaves little room for the transfer.

Book and board

Search for 大理 as the arrival station on 12306. Tickets normally go on sale 15 days ahead, including the current day. Complete passenger identity verification before the sale opens, then enter the correct departure station, date, train and passenger document. Foreign passports are supported; other accepted documents use their matching fields in the Chinese system. The train ticket guide covers registration, document details, children and ticket changes.

Plan to reach the station about 60 minutes before departure, especially for a first visit. Carry the original document used for the ticket. After security, find your train on the departure board, go to its waiting area and use a staffed document-check lane when needed. At Dali, follow the exit signs before choosing the hotel transfer.

Dali station to the old town, Xiaguan or Erhai

Choose the accommodation area before choosing a bus:

Xiaguan, 下关 Stay in the newer city near Dali station or other urban streets. Take a taxi to the exact address; municipal route 1 serves station and central Xiaguan stops such as 建设路.
Dali Old Town, 大理古城 Use the station express to the old-town transport centre, then walk or take a local vehicle to the closest hotel gate. A direct taxi suits several bags or an awkward final walk.
Caicun or Longkan, 才村 / 龙龛 These west-shore villages suit lake mornings. Arrange a ride to the village’s vehicle access point, then the final walk to the inn.
Xizhou, 喜洲 This is a separate base farther north on the west side. Use a direct transfer, or a reserved lake-bus journey from the old-town hub followed by a local connection.
Haidong, 海东, or nearby east-shore hotels Match the hotel to its named village. The municipal 海东 route from the station serves 理想邦 and 金梭岛 on its way to 海东镇.
Wenbi or Shuanglang, 文笔 / 双廊 Arrange the longer lake transfer by the hotel address. The municipal 海东 route is not an established through service to all these villages.

The Dali station–old town express costs CNY 5 per person, as shown on the operator page checked on 13 October 2026. It runs around arriving trains, takes about 40 minutes and ends at 大理古城（环洱海服务中心）. After leaving the station, follow signs to the left through the food and shop area. The operator counter is at its end beside the taxi queue; staff direct passengers over the footbridge to the coach. Buy there or use the operator’s reservation channel. The arrival is a transport hub, so include the remaining trip to your room.

Municipal route 8 also links the station with 大理古城东门 and 大理古城公交车场. It is useful when its stop matches your hotel. With heavy bags, ask the inn for the closest point a vehicle can reach and the length of the final walk.

The separate lake sightseeing buses start at the old-town hub. The west route passes the S-bend and Xizhou toward Shuanglang; the east route serves places including Jinsuo Island and Wenbi toward Shuanglang. After activating a pass through its SMS link, reserve the boarding point, destination and departure, then arrive about five minutes before that slot. This is a way to travel between named lake stops, rather than a replacement for every hotel’s last leg.

For a short stay, arrive, leave your bags at your accommodation and enjoy an old-town evening. Make a lake outing the next day. If you choose a Shuanglang or Haidong room, go straight to that base instead of adding an old-town detour with luggage.

Return from Dali to Kunming

Start with the next address you need in Kunming. The same train may stop at both 昆明 and 昆明南, at different times and prices. On 13 October 2026, D3828 left Dali at 09:11 and reached central Kunming at 11:16 for CNY 145 per person in second class; continuing to Kunming South gave an 11:39 arrival at CNY 155.5. Other services had different running times and discounts.

Book the arrival station that fits your onward journey. For a flight, add the separate station-to-airport transfer and the airline’s check-in time after the rail arrival. Arrange hotel pickup early enough to reach Dali station around 60 minutes before departure. The CNY 5 arrival coach’s rolling departures do not provide a reverse timetable; reserve a suitable return departure or arrange a car from your exact lodging base.

A Chuxiong night for Yi culture, museum galleries and a local meal

Chuxiong rewards an overnight stop more than a hurried platform break. The museum explains the region’s fossils, bronze work and Yi textiles; the evening gives you time for food and the commercial cultural streets of 彝人古镇. Buy separate rail segments to and from 楚雄站, then continue toward Dali or return to Kunming the next day.

Museum first, cultural town later

Take a taxi from the station to your accommodation and leave your bags. Go to 楚雄州博物馆 on 鹿城南路 while there is time for a full visit. Entry is free. Its published visitor notice lists Tuesday–Sunday 09:00–17:00, with last entry at 16:30, and Monday closure. Allow about 1.5–2.5 hours for the visit. Free Chinese-language tours are listed at 10:00 and 15:00, lasting about 40 minutes.

Start with the fossil gallery if children want skeletons, continue to the 万家坝铜鼓 bronze drums, then look at Yi costume patterns before visiting textile shops later. The museum’s announced 2026 programme lists 楚雄州博物馆馆藏精品书画展, a collection of paintings and calligraphy, in gallery 1 from 30 September to 25 October 2026. Add it to an October visit within those announced dates.

After the museum, take a taxi to 彝人古镇. This is a purpose-built tourism and shopping town with Yi-style buildings. Follow 桃花溪, browse embroidery shops, pass the 葫芦长廊 and finish around 六祖广场 for your meal and evening stroll. Allow roughly 3–4 hours for the walk, dinner and evening together. Left-foot dancing and fire-themed performances are part of the town’s cultural programme; choose that evening’s activity when you arrive. The dining show 彝乡恋歌 is a separate paid evening choice.

What to eat and how to use a second day

野生菌火锅, wild mushroom hotpot, makes a useful local meal when the restaurant has mushrooms that day. Let staff finish cooking them before you start eating, and skip alcohol with wild mushrooms. Mushroom hotpot can use meat broth. If you eat vegetarian food, ask for water or vegetable broth and exclude meat, fish, shrimp, meat stock, lard, fish sauce and oyster sauce. A vegan meal also needs to exclude eggs and dairy. 羊汤锅, goat soup, is a meat option that can include blood and offal; ask for the cut you want before ordering.

If you have dietary requirements or food preferences, you can create a free dining card in Chinese to show staff before ordering.

An overnight near 彝人古镇 lets you stay for the evening, then return to 楚雄站 for the next rail leg. With two days, keep the first day for the museum and town. Use the second for a slower textile-shopping visit or, if the Yi calendar interests you, add 中国彝族十月太阳历文化园 before leaving. Build its visit around your chosen onward train rather than placing it between a late museum entry and dinner.

A Lufeng dinosaur day: town museum or original fossil site

Choose the kind of dinosaur visit before arranging the car. The free town museum is a compact indoor stop. World Dinosaur Valley has fossils at their original burial site, with amusement rides and hot springs as separate choices. Both use 禄丰南站 for a rail-based visit. Book separate segments from Kunming to Lufeng South and onward to Dali, or use the reverse order on your return.

A shorter stop at 禄丰恐龙博物馆

Take a taxi from Lufeng South to 禄丰恐龙博物馆 in Jinshan town. It is free and has dinosaur displays alongside ceramics and local relics. Allow about 60–90 minutes, then have lunch around 大井街 or 金山古镇 before returning to the station.

The museum opens Tuesday–Sunday 08:00–12:00 and 14:00–18:00; last entry is 11:30 and 17:30. It closes on Mondays. Choose a morning or afternoon train arrival that fits one of these sessions, since the lunch closure matters on a short stop. Busy periods use free paper tickets with controlled admission. The contact number is 0878-4130652. Bag deposit is offered at security, but arrange large suitcases with your accommodation or car operator.

Fossils first at 世界恐龙谷

For the original fossil site, use 世界恐龙谷 in 恐龙山镇阿纳村 as the car destination. Arrange pickup at Lufeng South and the return journey before setting your onward rail time. A municipal tourism itinerary puts the drive from Jinshan town to the valley at about 30 minutes; leave additional room for reaching the driver and station boarding.

The listed attraction hours are 09:30–18:00. Begin in the original fossil burial hall, where the fossils give the visit its special value, then see the mounted skeletons. Allow about 2–3 hours for a fossil-focused visit, plus the road journeys. For children who want rides, plan 4–6 hours at the site and choose a play block after the fossil halls and lunch. Outdoor walking and queues add effort; each ride has its own posted height rules.

A ticket named 恐龙遗址公园 is the fossil-site choice. 恐龙时空乐园 rides and 栖龙湾温泉 are other components, so choose them separately when building a longer family day. On 13 October 2026, the Klook fossil-site adult listing displayed CNY 160 per adult. It is a dated platform quote for that admission product, not the price of every park activity.

Finish the fossil visit before using the remaining time for play or a meal. Then take the arranged car back to 禄丰南站, with your bags and original booking documents, for the separately booked Dali or Kunming train. For a full rides-and-hot-spring day, an overnight gives you more space than trying to fit both components ahead of an evening train.

Luggage, station names and practical coordination

Train times use China Standard Time, UTC+8. Save the exact station, accommodation address and pickup point for every leg. For a stopover, arrange where bags will stay: your overnight accommodation or a vehicle with agreed luggage space is more useful than assuming storage at a station. A direct vehicle booking should include the final pickup after the museum or park as well as the first ride.
