Choose seven, ten or fourteen days

Count your arrival and departure days before adding places. In these plans, a full sightseeing day has no intercity journey or airport transfer. A short walk after check-in still leaves most of a transfer day for travel.

Time in Yunnan Nights and bases Full sightseeing days Best use
7 calendar days Dali 3, Lijiang 3: 6 nights 4 Lakeside time, village crafts and one snow-mountain day
10 calendar days Kunming 1, Dali 3, Lijiang 3, Shangri-La 2: 9 nights 5 A compact introduction to the classic north
14 calendar days Kunming 2, Dali 4, Lijiang 4, Shangri-La 3: 13 nights 9 More local time and a second full day in Shangri-La

The seven-day route works best when you arrive in Dali and leave Lijiang. If both flights use Kunming, those extra journeys take time from the four full days. Add arrival/return nights to keep the outings. Seven full sightseeing days would normally need nine calendar days and eight nights once arrival and departure are included.

For seven days, leave Shangri-La, Kunming sightseeing and remote lake detours out. If Tibetan culture is your main interest, choose Lijiang and Shangri-La as the two bases and replace Dali. Ten days give Kunming an arrival night, rather than a full city visit. Choose fourteen for that city day and slower mornings at the other bases. Check Yunnan by train, private driver or small group to decide between rail transfers and hired cars.

Set the final departure city now. Flying or taking an onward train from Shangri-La keeps the northbound order. Returning to Kunming takes another journey: in the ten-day plan it replaces day 9 and that night's hotel; in the fourteen-day plan it replaces day 13. Book a Kunming overnight before the final flight.

Seven days with Dali and Lijiang as your two bases

Use one hotel near an accessible edge of Dali Old Town and one near Dayan Old Town in Lijiang. That gives you town evenings without carrying luggage between lake villages. A lakeside room near Caicun is another Dali choice if waterfront mornings matter more; it changes your local transfers.

Day Start, activities and finish Sleep
1 Arrive at Dali airport or station, transfer to the hotel, then take a short old-town walk and eat nearby. Dali, night 1
2 From the hotel, visit a short west-shore section of Erhai around 才村 or 龙龛. Walk or cycle, stop for lunch or coffee, then return to the same hotel. Dali, night 2
3 Visit 喜洲 for old streets and lunch, then 周城 for Bai tie-dye. Return to Dali in the afternoon. Dali, night 3
4 Travel from the hotel to 大理站, take the train to 丽江站, then transfer to the Lijiang hotel. Explore 大研古城 after check-in. Lijiang, night 1
5 Spend the day at Jade Dragon Snow Mountain with one reserved cable car and 蓝月谷. Return to the Lijiang hotel. Lijiang, night 2
6 Visit 白沙 in the morning, have lunch, then explore 束河. Return to the same hotel for your final evening. Lijiang, night 3
7 Check out and transfer to Lijiang station or 丽江三义机场 for departure. Departure

Day 2 is a short lakeside outing, not a full circuit of Erhai. Choose one entrance and a return point. A whole-lake car trip would use that whole day and offer less time on foot by the water. In Zhou Cheng, 璞真白族扎染博物馆 is a concrete craft stop: arrange the session around your village visit, then allow time for lunch and the return drive.

Day 5 belongs to the mountain. Day 6 gives Baisha's lanes and cafés, then Shuhe, their own time. If you prefer one quiet village, spend longer there instead of doing both. The route keeps your bags at the same hotel during both outings.

The classic north in ten or fourteen days

The ten-day route follows Kunming, Dali, Lijiang and Shangri-La. Use the road between the last two bases to see the managed Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge viewpoint. A train directly between the cities is another base transfer, but it does not include the gorge.

Day Start, activities and finish Sleep
1 Arrive in Kunming, check in, then visit 翠湖 or nearby old streets if time permits. Kunming
2 Travel from the booked Kunming station to 大理站, transfer to the hotel, then walk in the old town. Dali, night 1
3 Erhai west-shore walk or short bicycle outing, lunch, return to the hotel. Dali, night 2
4 喜洲 and 周城 craft day, returning to Dali. Dali, night 3
5 Train from Dali to Lijiang, hotel transfer, then Dayan Old Town. Lijiang, night 1
6 One chosen Jade Dragon cable car and Blue Moon Valley, returning to Lijiang. Lijiang, night 2
7 Baisha, lunch and Shuhe, returning to Lijiang. Lijiang, night 3
8 Leave Lijiang with luggage in the booked vehicle. Visit the ticketed 上虎跳 viewing area, have lunch, then continue to the Shangri-La hotel. Take a short 独克宗古城 evening walk. Shangri-La, night 1
9 松赞林寺 in the morning, lunch and rest, then selected 纳帕海 roadside viewpoints by car. Return to the hotel. Shangri-La, night 2
10 Transfer to 香格里拉站 or 迪庆香格里拉机场 for the booked departure. Departure

Give day 8 to the scenic transfer. Allow around 1½–2 hours at the managed viewing area as a visit plan, then lunch and the onward drive. Book the actual scenic entrance, luggage space and your next hotel as the endpoint. An optional Lijiang-to-Shangri-La sightseeing transfer combines the gorge stop with the move.

The current September 2026 notice continues restrictions on the high trail and middle/lower gorge. This itinerary uses the ticketed Upper Gorge visitor area. It does not include a high-trail trek.

Fourteen days: keep the bases and add local time

Day Route and activities Sleep
1 Arrive Kunming; hotel and a short nearby walk. Kunming, night 1
2 Full city day: Cuihu, the area around Yunnan University, old-town food and market streets. Kunming, night 2
3 Train to Dali; check in and explore the old town. Dali, night 1
4 Short Erhai west-shore walk or cycle, with a lakeside lunch. Dali, night 2
5 Xizhou and Zhou Cheng crafts. Dali, night 3
6 Choose one Cangshan cable-car/temple outing, or a slow lake and old-town day. Dali, night 4
7 Train to Lijiang; hotel and Dayan afternoon. Lijiang, night 1
8 Jade Dragon cable car and Blue Moon Valley. Lijiang, night 2
9 Baisha and Shuhe. Lijiang, night 3
10 A local day around 黑龙潭 and town, with time for laundry and rest. Lijiang, night 4
11 Lijiang → ticketed Upper Gorge viewpoint → Shangri-La; short Dukezong evening. Shangri-La, night 1
12 Songzanlin, lunch/rest and selected Napa Lake viewpoints. Shangri-La, night 2
13 Choose 普达措 for a longer nature day, or local culture and town time for shorter walks. Shangri-La, night 3
14 Station or airport transfer and departure. Departure

For a Kunming flight, replace day 13 with the train to Kunming and sleep there. The route still has thirteen nights, with eight full sightseeing days. The longer version makes space for rest and different activity levels while keeping four bases.

Three weeks: northern towns, coffee and forest-grown tea

For a change of landscape, keep Dali and Lijiang, then travel south to Pu'er, Jingmai and Jinghong. This 21-day/20-night route leaves Shangri-La out so the southern stays have useful time. Night totals are Kunming 3, Dali 4, Lijiang 4, Pu'er 2, Jingmai 3 and Jinghong 4.

Day Route and activity order Sleep
1–2 Arrive Kunming on day 1; spend day 2 around Cuihu and the old town. Kunming, 2 nights
3 Train Kunming → Dali; hotel and short evening walk. Dali
4–6 Day 4: old town and food. Day 5: Erhai west shore. Day 6: Xizhou and Zhou Cheng. Return to the same hotel each day. Dali, 3 more nights
7 Train Dali → Lijiang; hotel and nearby dinner. Lijiang
8–10 Day 8: old town and Black Dragon Pool. Day 9: Jade Dragon and Blue Moon Valley. Day 10: Baisha/Shuhe. Lijiang, 3 more nights
11 Train Lijiang → Kunming; overnight break before the southern corridor. Kunming
12 Train Kunming → 普洱站; transfer to a city base in 思茅区, then tea or coffee locally. Pu'er
13 A prearranged visit to 小凹子咖啡庄园 near 南岛河村: coffee growing, roasting or brewing according to your session; return to Pu'er. Pu'er
14 Road transfer Pu'er → 惠民镇 → Jingmai mountain lodging. Settle in, then walk around your village. Jingmai
15–16 Day 15: a hosted old-tea-forest walk and tasting. Day 16: another village, such as 糯干古寨 or 翁基古寨, with time for tea and local culture. Jingmai, 2 more nights
17 Road down through Huimin to Jinghong; check in and eat nearby. Jinghong
18–20 Day 18: Dai culture in the city and evening market. Day 19: the Tropical Botanical Garden in 勐仑 as a full outing. Day 20: a booked guided rainforest day or a relaxed city day. Return to the Jinghong hotel. Jinghong, 3 more nights
21 Transfer to 景洪嘎洒机场 or begin the booked onward rail journey from 西双版纳站. Departure

Pu'er city and Jingmai Mountain are separate bases. The city stay is in Simao; Jingmai is in Lancang county and needs a road journey. Arrange both the arrival and departure with the mountain lodging or operator when you book the three nights. A village stay gives tea-forest walks and conversations time to develop. Tea picking and processing depend on the season and the activity booked; coffee learning at Xiaowazi is a different experience.

This southward choice works especially well in the tropical dry season, November–April. Bring warmer layers for northern mornings and tea-mountain evenings as well as clothes for Jinghong. For a simpler route, move Jingmai's three nights to Pu'er and Jinghong: you reduce one hotel change and two mountain-road transfers. For slow northern travel instead, extend the stays in the fourteen-day plan and give each base more café, food and village days. Choose that version if longer stays matter more than tropical variety.

With children or older relatives: fewer moves and a lunch break

For shorter walks and one change of base, use eight days and seven nights in Kunming and Dali. It keeps city food, lake scenery and Bai crafts together without requiring a high mountain day.

Day Activity and rest plan Sleep
1 Arrive Kunming, settle in and eat near the hotel. Kunming, night 1
2 Short Cuihu waterfront outing, nearby lunch, afternoon hotel rest. Kunming, night 2
3 Old streets and food in the morning; return after lunch. Kunming, night 3
4 Train to Dali and booked hotel transfer; only a short old-town walk after check-in. Dali, night 1
5 One Erhai west-shore entrance, the corridor operator's sightseeing vehicle and a short waterfront walk; lunch and hotel rest. Dali, night 2
6 Car to Xizhou, lunch, then an optional Zhou Cheng tie-dye session; return to the same hotel. Dali, night 3
7 Slow breakfast, café or shopping, then rest or another short lakeside visit. Dali, night 4
8 Transfer to Dali airport/station for departure, or dedicate the day to the booked Kunming return. Departure

If you want Lijiang, use the seven-day two-base route with shorter lake walks, a lunch break in the craft day and one village on day 6. Choose mountain scenery by the actual height reached: Glacier Park's cable car arrives at 4,506 m; Spruce Meadow is around 3,260 m. A lower meadow still means high-altitude travel. Children can develop altitude illness as adults can. Keep gradual ascent and rest in the route; with symptoms, do not move to a higher sleeping base, and descend if symptoms worsen. Discuss the actual route with an altitude-informed clinician if heart or lung conditions affect the choice. A small oxygen can does not replace acclimatization.

The Yak Meadow cableway has been closed for reconstruction since 4 March 2026; the operator expects the new line to open in 2028.

For rooms, compare actual beds and occupancy: one family room, two nearby twins or connecting rooms. Hilton Lijiang is an optional pool-and-rest base with connecting rooms. It is above Wenbi Lake, around twenty minutes by car from Dayan, so budget local drives beside that choice. In an old-town hotel, the car gate and distance to the room may matter more than the map pin. Select a vehicle for passengers, suitcases and any requested child seat.

Solo travel: a private room, shared outings and clear costs

Use the same bases and trains, then join transport for the day that needs it. In Kunming, Upland hostel at 华山西路92号 offers a private single as well as dorm beds, with shared garden/terrace spaces. A private room lets you meet people and still sleep alone. Ask reception which social activity runs during your stay.

Stairs separate reception from the guest-room lift, and some private-room guests report hearing conversations from the corridor.

Independent days can be simple: Cuihu, lunch and Kunming old streets; one Erhai west-shore entrance and a bicycle or short walk from Dali; a Lijiang old-town morning followed by Baisha or Shuhe. Each ends at your existing room. Keep Xizhou/Zhou Cheng as a separate Dali outing. For the snow-mountain day, a joined Jade Dragon trip can share transport and reservations; select the cable-car route you want.

Cost How a solo traveler pays
Rail, bus, admission, joined day trip One passenger or one booked seat
Hostel dorm One bed
Private room The whole room price
A confirmed whole-car hire The whole vehicle price; companions can share that total

If four people split a whole-car quote equally, each pays a quarter; traveling alone means paying the whole quote. A private tour displayed per person or by group size uses its own pricing, so use that booking total directly. Keep the intercity ticket separate from the sightseeing vehicle. When sharing with hostel companions, agree on stops, departure, return and the cost split before booking. A day tour returning to Lijiang does not move you to a Shangri-La hotel.

Book the route and handle the station transfers

For payment and navigation setup, use paying in Yunnan and travel internet and maps.

Book arrival and departure cities, hotel nights and intercity trains first, then the specific mountain day and gorge transfer. 12306 sells train tickets within a fifteen-day period including the current day. Use the document and passenger details that match your booking.

Move Train journey seen in booking tables Hotel-to-hotel planning allowance
Kunming → Dali Roughly 2–2¾ hours, depending on station and train 4–5 hours
Dali → Lijiang About 1 hour 36 minutes–2½ hours on direct C-series services 3½–5 hours
Lijiang → Shangri-La About 1 hour 10 minutes–1 hour 50 minutes 2½–4 hours, without the gorge

The allowances include local access, station time and hotel check-in; they are not railway timetables. In Kunming, read the ticket for 昆明站 or 昆明南站. Allow about 45–60 minutes at the station as part of your plan. At Dali station, the old-town express reaches 大理古城(环洱海服务中心); follow the service signs to the left after the exit, through the food area and across the pedestrian bridge to boarding. Continue from the old-town stop to your lodging. At Lijiang, ask the hotel for the actual vehicle drop-off gate and luggage route.

Choose one Jade Dragon cable car before booking. 冰川公园索道 reaches the high glacier platform; 云杉坪索道 serves the forest meadow. The September 23, 2026 visitor-service interview states that 丽江旅游集团 opens glacier and spruce reservations seven days ahead, at 20:00 and 21:00 respectively, China local time. 玉龙雪山服务 handles scenic admission. Admission and a cable-car reservation are separate selections.

With a morning cable-car slot, travel from Lijiang through 甘海子 and the scenic transfer, take the reserved cable car, descend for lunch, visit Blue Moon Valley and return to your hotel. With a later slot, place the valley before the cable car and keep the reserved time central to the day. Keep the mountain outing at the same overnight base. For the gorge transfer, choose the actual 上虎跳 visitor entrance and onward hotel; 虎跳峡镇 is a town, not the viewing entrance. With public transport, purchase the onward journey using the seller's actual boarding and drop-off points.
