Three to five days between the old town, mountains and lake

Plan three full days in Dali: one for the old town and Three Pagodas, one for a Cangshan cableway, and one for the western lakeshore and Xizhou village. Base yourself near Dali Old Town 大理古城 for all three days. You can walk out to dinner every night without packing bags between stops. Choosing a guesthouse near an outer edge or gate of the old town makes luggage drop-off far easier; share the exact street entrance with your driver rather than a generic gate name.
Plan your stay and arrival: Where to stay in Dali: Old Town, lake or village · Kunming to Dali: trains, station transfers and stopovers in Chuxiong or Lufeng.
Three full sightseeing days generally require four nights if arriving in the evening and departing the morning after day three. Three nights work if arriving early on day one or leaving late on day three, though transfer buffers are essential. Treat an afternoon arrival as time to settle in, take a stroll, and have dinner.
Arrival: reaching Dali Old Town
Dali railway station 大理站 is located in Xiaguan 下关, roughly 17 km south of the old town. A train-linked operator shuttle runs from the station to the Old Town Erhai Service Centre 大理古城(环洱海服务中心), taking about 40 minutes for CNY 5 per person (checked 13 October 2026). When exiting the railway station, turn left toward the commercial ticket counter, then cross the footbridge to the boarding bays. From the old town shuttle depot, take a short local taxi to your guesthouse.
Dali Airport’s notice dated 30 September 2026 lists buses from 大理机场 to Dali railway station 大理站 for CNY 15 per person and to the old town’s south gate 大理古城南门 for CNY 25 per person. These are the October 2026 fares, checked 14 October. Buy at the airport counter and confirm your destination and departure before boarding. From the south gate, continue to the hotel’s agreed entrance; give a booked driver the exact hotel entrance if using a direct car.
Day one: Three Pagodas, civic heritage and an old town evening
Start and end your day at your old town base. Head to Chongsheng Temple and the Three Pagodas 崇圣寺三塔 in the morning, then return for lunch and an afternoon walking route through town. Pairing these together frames Dali's heritage clearly: royal Buddhist architecture in the morning, followed by Bai vernacular courtyards and municipal history in the afternoon. Spend the evening dining around Renmin Road 人民路.
Day two: choose one Cangshan cableway route
After breakfast, take a taxi directly to your chosen cableway lower station. Searching for just 苍山 (Cangshan) on ride-hailing apps or booking engines is too broad.
Choose Gantong Cableway 感通索道 for lush forest, Qingbi Stream 清碧溪, and gentle walking. The lower station sits beside Gantong Temple 感通寺, west of Qiliqiao Guanyintang 七里桥观音塘, reaching an upper terminal at 2,552 m. Ascend to explore the canyon and stream pools, walk a scenic out-and-back stretch along the paved Jade Belt Path 玉带路, and descend on the same cableway. The government-approved return fare is CNY 100 per person (CNY 65 one way, checked 13 October 2026), excluding the separate mountain park admission.
Choose Ximatan Cableway 洗马潭索道 for high-altitude alpine views and boardwalk trails near Ximatan. Starting from Tianlong Babu Film Town 天龙八部影视城, it travels past Qilongnü Pool 七龙女池 to the top station at 3,885 m. The checked platform quoted CNY 318 per adult for full return travel with geopark admission, usable 45 minutes after booking, or CNY 190 for the half route with park admission, usable after 30 minutes (13 October 2026). The mid-route segment stops in the forest and misses the alpine scenery. Wind or lightning can suspend the upper section; check real-time operations before buying and read the altitude and arrival guide before heading to 3,885 m.

Normal Gantong admission is 08:30–16:00. Ximatan admission is 08:00–16:00 in January–February and April–October, and 08:30–15:00 in other months. Ask for the last descent at the lower station before ascending, then plan your return to the upper station. Online cableway tickets require paper-ticket exchange and payment at least 30 minutes ahead; follow the selected product’s activation delay too. Carry the travel document used for booking and a warm layer. Zhonghe Cableway 中和索道 starts west of Sanyue Street racecourse 三月街赛马场 and reaches Zhonghe Temple 中和寺 and the Jade Belt Path.
Day three: west-shore ecological corridor and Xizhou
Head from your hotel to Longkan 龙龛古渡 or Caicun 才村 along the Erhai western shore. Longkan to Caicun makes an easy walking section; cyclists can rent a bike and ride north toward Panxi 磻溪 before returning. Check rental return conditions beforehand; doing an out-and-back ride to your starting point makes catching road transport much smoother.
The protected western ecological corridor stretches roughly 46 km from Yangnanxi 阳南溪 north to Taoyuan 桃源. Park a road rental scooter outside the corridor, then walk or use a permitted bicycle or visitor vehicle. Official visitor options include bicycles, assisted bicycles and sightseeing carts; agree the rental return point before leaving.
Return your bike, eat lunch, and take a car up to Xizhou 喜洲. Walk the stone lanes, admire historic Bai courtyard architecture, and stop by Sifang Street 四方街 for freshly baked Xizhou baba. Village exploration is best enjoyed at an unhurried pace, which is why taking road transport north from the corridor is far more practical than attempting to cycle the entire lakeshore in a single day. Catch a return taxi back to the old town for dinner.
Adding a fourth or fifth day

For a four-day stay, keep your old town room and hire a driver for a day trip around the eastern shore of Erhai. Stop at Wenbi 文笔, Xiaoputuo 小普陀, or Shuanglang 双廊 for lunch and panoramic open-water views.
With five days, consider moving your base to Shuanglang 双廊 for one night. Bring your luggage on the east-shore excursion, check in by the water, and enjoy a quieter lakeside morning before arranging your onward road transfer from that hotel. For a train, allow a separate drive back to Dali station in Xiaguan.
A culture day at the Three Pagodas and Bai courtyards

Set aside a full morning for Chongsheng Temple and the Three Pagodas 崇圣寺三塔. The towering 69.13-metre Qianxun Pagoda 千寻塔 dates to the ninth-century Nanzhao kingdom, while the two flanking pagodas were built during the Dali Kingdom. Behind them stands the expansive, modern reconstruction of the royal monastery complex, illustrating imperial Dali's deep Buddhist traditions.
Morning: Three Pagodas and monastery complex
Take a car from your old town hotel to 崇圣寺三塔 and arrange the return at the entrance. Admission is listed as 08:00–17:00. The platform quote checked on 13 October 2026 was CNY 75 per adult for basic admission. Products including a sightseeing cart are sold separately; choose the product you need.
Allow two to two and a half hours for the full uphill walking circuit. Begin at the base of the pagodas, pausing at Reflection Pool 聚影池 for the classic reflection shot. Continue past the Nanzhao Jianji Bell 南诏建极大钟 and Rain Bronze Guanyin Hall 雨铜观音殿 to the central monastery gate 崇圣寺山门. Walk up through the Great Buddha Hall 大雄宝殿 and Acuoye Guanyin Hall 阿嵯耶观音殿 to Wanghai Tower 望海楼 for views over the lake.
The bell was recast in 1997 and the Rain Copper Guanyin Hall rebuilt in 1999. The Rain Copper Guanyin 雨铜观音 has a male body and female face; Acuoye Guanyin 阿嵯耶观音 is a distinct regional form. Compare these later works with the older pagodas. If you prefer to limit steep climbing, focus on the pagodas and reflection pool, then return without completing the upper temple mountain ascent.
Afternoon: old town streets, shrines and courtyards
Return to the old town for lunch, starting your afternoon walk at the South Gate 南门. Stroll down Fuxing Road 复兴路 through the historical grid. Step inside the Dali City Museum 大理市博物馆 (housed in the former Du Wenxiu residence 杜文秀帅府) when open to understand Dali's 19th-century history.
Walk past Wuhua Tower 五华楼 and visit Dali Confucian Temple 大理文庙. For Bai craft traditions and architectural woodwork, head to Jiang Gong Shrine 蒋公祠 at 123 Yu'er Road (玉洱路123号), home to the Dali Old Town Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum 大理古城非遗博物馆. Visit its two courtyards and the exhibits open that day. Craft workshops announced for a festival date do not establish a daily class.
Wrap up your afternoon along Renmin Road 人民路 with an early dinner before strolling back to your room.
A day of Bai food, from market breakfast to grilled milk cheese

Structure your food day around local settings: an early market breakfast, a relaxed old town lunch, an afternoon milk-cheese snack, and freshly baked baba in Xizhou.
08:00–09:00: breakfast at North Gate Market
Walk or take a short ride to North Gate Farmers' Market 北门农贸市场 (search 北门市场; located on Bo'ai Road 博爱路, 30 m west of Yixintang Pharmacy). The venue listing gives 08:00–18:00; 08:00–09:00 fits breakfast before the day’s outing.
Order a bowl of xidoufen 稀豆粉 (warm, savoury yellow pea porridge) with a crispy youtiao 油条 (fried dough cruller). Other morning staples include cold pea jelly noodles (豌豆凉粉) and rice strips (ershi 饵丝). If you prefer your chilli served on the side, show the vendor:
一碗稀豆粉,一根油条。辣椒另外放。 (One bowl of pea porridge and one fried dough stick. Please put the chilli on the side.)
Browse the produce stalls before heading out for the day.
Lunch: family-style Bai dishes and ordering tips
For a solo lunch, order single bowls such as cold chicken rice noodles (凉鸡米线), with chicken, walnuts and chilli or pepper oil.
For two or more diners, share a couple of dishes such as Dali sour and spicy fish (酸辣鱼), cooked with white papaya, tofu and chilli. When ordering fresh fish, always confirm pricing format and weight before it is cooked:
鱼是按条卖还是按斤卖?这条多重,一共多少钱? (Is the fish sold by the whole fish or by weight? How heavy is this one, and what is the total price?)
Note that one jin (斤) equals 500 grams. To verify general portion sizes, ask:
这个是一个人的份量吗?我们两个人,点几个菜合适? (Is this portion for one person? There are two of us; how many dishes do you recommend?)
The documented aquatic greens and taro soup 海菜芋头汤 includes cured pork, so its vegetable name does not establish a vegetarian recipe.
Afternoon: rushan cheese and Xizhou baba
Rushan 乳扇 is a traditional Bai cheese made from cow's milk set with acid, stretched into thin sheets, and sun-dried. Look for grilled rushan and ask which filling or topping the stall offers. Eat it hot while the cheese is soft and stretchy.
When visiting Xizhou, sample authentic Xizhou baba (喜洲粑粑) around Sifang Street 四方街. A well-known local vendor is Lao Yan's flaky baba (老严破酥粑粑). Baba comes in two styles: savoury (minced pork and spring onions) or sweet (crushed rose petals, brown sugar, or red bean). Even sweet baba is traditionally laminated with pork lard (猪油) to create its flaky crust. To try both, ask:
甜的和咸的各一个,请切开。 (One sweet and one savoury, please cut into pieces.)
Clarifying dietary requirements
Show the ingredient exclusions that match your needs before ordering:
Vegetarian: 不要肉、鱼、海鲜、猪油、肉汤和蚝油。 (No meat, fish, seafood, lard, meat broth, or oyster sauce.)
Vegan: add this to the vegetarian exclusions above: 不要鸡蛋、牛奶、乳扇和蜂蜜。 (No eggs, cow's milk, rushan cheese, or honey.)
Milk allergy: 我对牛奶过敏,不能吃乳扇或其他奶制品。 (I am allergic to cow's milk and cannot eat rushan or other dairy products.)
No pork: 不要猪肉、猪油和猪肉汤。 (No pork meat, lard, or pork broth.)
If you have dietary requirements or food preferences, you can create a free dining card in Chinese to show staff before ordering.
Transfers and departure logistics
For high-speed trains to Kunming, Lijiang, or Shangri-La, depart from Dali Railway Station 大理站 in Xiaguan. Refer to the China train booking guide for ticketing and passport validation. Arrange the hotel-to-station transfer against your booked train and leave time for boarding. If your final night is in Shuanglang, calculate the road transfer from that hotel.
For the return to Dali Airport, check departures from 风花雪月机场城市候机楼, inside the Landscape Hotel parking area at the old town’s east gate, or from 大理港码头内机场城市候机楼 in Xiaguan. The old town arrival stop at the south gate and the return terminal at the east gate are different places. Confirm the departure and journey time at your chosen terminal, arrive before boarding, and add the airline’s check-in time to the road journey. Save the hotel entrance and transport stops in Chinese.
